Schynige Platte

Alpine Botanical Garden - Flowers with a Panorama

Schynige Platte is a plateau near Interlaken, at an altitude of 1967 m.

Located right at the heart of the Jungfrau region, on the historic cog railway instantly feel carried back to the Belle Époche. The wooden benches in the coaches of the nostalgic train as well as the vintage rolling stock dating from the nineteenth century exude the flair of times long past and revive the spirit of a bygone era, offering spectacular views along the way. The train departs from Wilderswil at 584 m.

The mountain station at 1967 metres is the starting point for various delightful circular hikes. It’s also home to the Alpine garden with some 650-plant species.

In the Botanical Alpine Garden, edelweiss, gentian and other mountain plants flourish in their natural environment above the tree line; one finds the colours and scents beguiling. A circular path introduces and invites one to two thirds of all alpine flora and to encounter some 650 different species of plant.

Alpine Flower World

We caught the train in the afternoon and it was not crowded at all, we had a car to ourselves. We were able to move from side to side to catch the best views and take pictures. The 50-minute train ride is very scenic and an attraction in itself: a narrow gauge historical cogwheel train with open windows, gets you up the mountain in 50 minutes, offering spectacular views along the way. The train will cross the river Lütschine. It then climbs up the meadows and enters a dense forest.

You can peek through the trees in some spots for a view of Interlaken and Lake Thun. The train then leaves the forest to enter the rolling meadows around the small mid-station Breitlauenen. Breitlauenen is located nearly 1000 m higher than the departure station in Wilderswil at 584m.

Next, the train continues to ascend while passing meadows, trees and some impressive rocks. It crosses a few tunnels and the views keep getting more spectacular during the last stretch to Schynige Platte.

This small station is so cute and offers another amazing view of the alps. We followed the sign for the 'Alpine Flower World', which is a few metres away. Our first priority were to spot the most iconic and legendary Alpine flower - the Edelweiss. And we were not disappointed, there it was, still in bloom. We walked around this wonderful garden while also marvelling at the panoramic views of the alps at every turn.

We ended this most amazing, spectacular and unforgettable day from Jungfraujoch to Schynige Platte via Lauterbrunnen by catching the last train down the mountain before 6pm from Schynige Platte.

Wonderful end to an unforgettable day!
