Salerno

A Historic and Charming City on the Amalfi Coast

Salerno

Travel

Miccolis bus from Bari Centrale to Salerno - via Vinciprova (€9.00 p/p)

The 4-hour journey including a refreshment stop along the way, was very pleasant in the Puglia and Campania regions - beautiful mountains and countryside.

The Miccolis bus stop in Bari is located at the "Piazzale Orazio Flacco" bus terminal, which is part of the Bari Centrale railway station complex.

To reach the Miccolis bus stop, you can follow the signs for the "Bus Terminal" or "Autostazione" within the station. The bus terminal is located on the lower level of the station, and you can access it via the stairs or elevators near the platforms. Once you reach the bus terminal, you should be able to find the Miccolis bus stop easily by looking for the signs or asking the staff.

It's worth noting that bus schedules and stop locations may be subject to change, so it's always a good idea to double-check the latest information with the bus company or a local tourism office before you travel.

Accommodation

Lovely place, spacious, clean, quiet, very comfortable beds and in the middle of everything. So convenient to visit the Amalfi coast with the ferry just 10 mins away, as well as bars, restaurants and shopping a stone throw away. The host very polite, helpful and responsive. Even arranged for a taxi to pick us up at the bus station.

We stayed here as it was much more affordable than other popular Amalfi coast towns. Easily commutable to Positano, Sorrento etc along the coast by ferry.

Eat

Spoilt for choice for seafood dishes.

Osteria dei Sapori - The seafood was excellent and the lady attending our table was so friendly and helpful with a smile. Great atmosphere too in the alley where the tables are set made it a typical Italian experience. Affordable and recommended.

Also, make sure to taste limoncello. It is a traditional Italian lemon liqueur that is typically made from lemon zest, alcohol, water, and sugar. It is a sweet and tangy drink that is often served as an after-dinner digestif. It is very affordable in Salerno, compared to other towns on the Amalfi coast, as a souvenir to take and savour at home.

  • Salerno is located in the Campania region of southern Italy. It is situated on the Amalfi Coast, overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, and is known for its picturesque seaside setting, historic landmarks, and lively cultural scene.

Salerno is also known for its historic Old Town, which features narrow streets, alleyways, and historic buildings dating back to the medieval and Renaissance periods.

Salerno

In addition to its historic and cultural attractions, it has a lively atmosphere and vibrant nightlife - bars, clubs, and music venues. You can also take part in one of the many festivals and events that take place throughout the year, including the Luci d'Artista, a festival of light installations and sculptures that transforms the city into a magical wonderland during the Christmas season.

  • One of the most iconic landmarks in Salerno is the Castello di Arechi, a medieval fortress perched on a hilltop overlooking the city. You can explore the castle's ramparts and towers and take in panoramic views of the Gulf of Salerno and surrounding mountains.

  • Another popular attraction in Salerno is the Lungomare Trieste, a scenic waterfront promenade that stretches along the city's seafront. Here, visitors can stroll along the palm-lined promenade, take in views of the Mediterranean Sea, and stop at cafes and restaurants for refreshments.

  • Salerno Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Matthew the Apostle, who is the patron saint of Salerno.

Salerno Cathedral

The cathedral has a long and complex history, with the original structure dating back to the 8th century.

One of the most notable features of the Salerno Cathedral is its ornate bronze doors, which were crafted in the 11th century and are considered to be one of the finest examples of medieval bronze work in Italy. The doors feature intricate reliefs depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments, as well as images of saints and angels.

Salerno Cathedral Crypt

The interior of the cathedral is also richly decorated, with frescoes, mosaics, and other works of art dating from various periods throughout its history. One of the most impressive features is the crypt, which contains the remains of Saint Matthew himself.
