Guadix

Cave-dwellings

16 - 17 May 2022

Taking it easy during the one hour and 30 mins drive to Guadix.

Google Map

Accommodation - Guadix (1 night)

Fantastic authentic cave dwelling in the cave district " Barrio Troglodyte" . Very homely, clean, well equipped and comfortable - we had the best sleep we could ever think - incredible experience. Maria and her daughter are super friendly and helpful with big smiles. Although we could not communicate verbally because of language, we understood each other through signs. The whole village is friendly.

Away from the main town - 30-40 mins walk (10 mins drive), it is the ideal location to visit the cave houses. The miradors are a stone throw away.

Places to visit

Barrio de Cuevas - This is the area with all the cave houses. Stunning setting under the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Guadix Cathedral - Beautiful architecture in the centre of the main town. It has a very interesting museum and worthy to climb the 150 or so steps of the bell tower. From the bell chamber, a spectacular 360° view unfolds in front of us. Entry with audio guide is 6.00€ p/p

Guadix Cathedral

Mirador Padre Poveda - Next to Cueva de Jose or Cueva de El Mirador ( very nice patio by the way ), this terrace has been fitted out with railings and views of the neighborhood and the entire Guadix plateau. Pedestrian access is free. 2 mins walk away from Maria's AirBnB.

Museo Centro de Interpretación Cuevas de Guadix - This fascinating museum is a treasure trove of how life was, it's origin. It was created from an original cave house.

Cuevas Museum

Parroquia Nuestra Señora De Gracia - Check out this beautiful cave church. The little courtyard is so cute. One minute walk from the AirBnB.

Nice stroll in downtown Guadix, and head to the Plaza de la Constitucion which is next to Guadix Cathedral.

Eat

El Refugio Restaurant - patio table, friendly and helpful staff. Food was great - rabo del toro with fries 23.00€ for 2

10 mins drive away from Guardix

Spectacular landscape, get off the main road at the Purullena exit towards Guadix, take a 4.5 km dirt road that is worth traveling to reach the Marchal viewpoint, you can see the Marchal ravines and the Purullena badlands.

Hand -crafted earthenware is sold on the roadside stores in the village.
